We are most grateful to Terry Horner for sending this Royalty Theatre programme when pianist and composer, Russ Conway, topped the bill during March 1959. He was supported by eight other acts on the programme, but of course the main attraction was “The Sensational Television and Recording Pianist~ RUSS CONWAY”, who was at the height of his career. He was a major star on television in an era when millions watched variety shows each week. He had 20 UK charts hits in a six year period starting from 1957. He composed and recorded “Side Saddle” and “Roulette”, both reaching the top of the UK charts, the latter even knocking “A Fool Such As I” by Elvis Presley off the No1 spot. In 1959 alone he achieved a cumulative total of 83 weeks on the UK Singles Chart.
The programme is also a marvelous account of how local businesses were eager to support the theatre by placing large block adverts on the pages.
For more fascinating details of Russ Conway, Terry Horner operates a website that is dedicated to this talented composer and pianist. Click on the tab below to be re-directed ~
